Infant Car Seats
Infant car seats are a must-have for any parent on the go. If you ’re driving, your baby must be secured in a car seat designed to meet your needs. Safety is obviously of paramount importance when choosing a car seat for your infant, but your baby ’s comfort is of utmost consideration as well.
Manufacturers offer many safety features, such as side-impact-protection, a five-point harness system and a contoured steel back plate. Inserts provide adaptability, so your baby can stay with one car seat from infancy to several months of age. An additional feature of the some infant car seat is compatibility with strollers, offering even greater convenience for the parent on the go.
Convertible Baby Car Seats
Convertible car seats are a necessity for any growing family. These seats are used in a forward-facing or backward-facing position depending on the age, weight and height of your child. It is preferable that you place your child in the backseat of a vehicle with a harness system. Most convertible car seats have a weight limit that starts at 22 pounds and goes to 80 pounds.
Most convertible car seats feature a five-point harness system, which is the safest system for your child. Some seats offer patented technology and features that guarantee the highest levels of safety for your little one. Depending on your price point, many seats also feature head and neck rests as well as extra cushioning in the seat; you can even find models with cup holders attached to the sides. Convertible toddler car seats come in a variety of colors and patterns to match the design of your stroller system.
Booster Car Seats
When your child is ready to graduate to a "big kid" car seat, give him or her the added freedom and comfort of a booster car seat. This allows your child to face forward, making it easier to interact with you. Your child no longer needs to be harnessed into her seat; your vehicle’s seat belts offer sufficient security with this booster. Another convenience is that booster seats are not latched in place, making it a simpler matter to move the seat from vehicle to vehicle.
Booster seats come as toddler booster seats (for 20- to 40-pound children) and booster seats for kids that weigh at least 40 pounds up to 80 pounds (depending on the model). Toddler booster seats have a high back, and boosters for larger children may also have a high back or no back at all. Another option is a convertible seat which is used in a rear-facing position for infants from birth up to 30 pounds, then turned around as they get older. While a convertible model may eliminate the need for a separate booster seat, convertible seats are not usually compatible with stroller mounting.
Combination Baby Car Seats
A combination car seat is a forward-facing-only car seat that has a 5-point internal harness and can also be used later as a belt-positioning booster car seat.
Combination car seats are often mistakenly called convertible car seats or booster seats. However, unlike a convertible car seat, combination seats cannot be used rear-facing. Unlike booster-only seats, the combination car seat has a harness that is used for children under a certain weight, but can also be used in booster mode later on.
