SLA and VRLA are different acronyms for the same battery, Sealed Lead Acid or Valve Regulated Lead Acid. This battery type has the following characteristics: Maintenance-free, leak-proof, position insensitive. Batteries of this kind have a safety vent to release gas in case of excessive internal pressure build up
What is the difference between VRLA and traditional wet batteries?
Wet batteries contain liquid electrolyte and do not have pressurized sealing vents; they must be installed upright and can spill
and cause corrosion if tipped or punctured. Wet batteries lose capacity and become permanently damaged if left in a discharged condition for any length of time or are continually over-discharged.
Ampere Hour Rating: The energy stored in a battery is measured in the units Ampere-hours (Ah). The units of energy are actually Volts × Amps × Seconds, but since the voltage of the cell is constant, it is only the product of current and
time which determines the amount of energy in the battery.
Contant Voltage Charge: The charge voltage must be stabilized. Otherwise, battery may be overcharged or discharged.
Initial Current:
A discharged battery will accept a high charging current at the initial stage of charging. But continuously high charging-current can cause abnormal internal heating which may damage the battery. Therefore, it is necessary to limit the initial charging current to 0.4C or below, under constant voltage charge in cyclic application.
What is the difference between cycle use and standby use?
When a battery is being used as a power source on a regular basis and it is being discharged and subsequently recharged, the battery is said to be in cyclic use. The determining factor in the life of this battery is the number of charge/discharge cycles that can be completed. In cyclical applications up to 1,000 charge/discharge cycles can be expected depending on the average depth of discharge.
Standby batteries are meant to act as an emergency power source where the main power source has failed for some reason. Consequently standby batteries are kept fully charged so that they can “kick in” immediately. The batteries remain connected to a trickle charger that will keep the battery fully charged and ready for use. In standby use the batteries
have a design life of up to five years. Please consult Technical Manual and product specifications to become aware of the many factors that effect product life.
